Preventing Breast Cancer

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, an annual reminder of the prevalence of the disease. While there is no guarantee, evidence suggests risks are lowest among women whose diets include the following cancer-protective foods:

  • Monounsatured fats such as olive oil in place of saturated and/or polyunsatured fats.
  • Eight 8 to 10 daily servings of vegetables and fruit.
  • Fish such as salmon or sardines 1-2 times per week (the omega-3 fatty acids they contain may inhibit breast tumors)
  • Ground flaxseed or other sources of fiber daily.
  • Soy foods (one serving daily for the cancer-protective substances in soy)
  • Green tea (consumption is linked to lower cancer incidence)
  • Little or no alcohol (even modest amounts are associated with increased breast cancer risk).
  • A multivitamin with folic acid, vitamin D and antioxidants.
  • Hormone-free dairy and animal products, as well as organic produce to reduce exposure to chemical toxins that may promote cancer.

Be well,
